N2  - The question of the earliest currently known rock art is considered from the empirical evidence available. The paper focuses on very early anthropogenic rock markings in central India and reviews these in a global context. The implications of taphonomic logic are considered to show that the most convenient interpretation of the available evidence is not necessarily the most parsimonious.
