Up to now, paleopathological investigations have been carried out only rarely. Therefore, the relatively well-preserved postcranial skeleton of the paleolithic individual from Brno II has been investigated using macroscopic, endoscopic and radiological techniques. All examined bones (left clavicle, right humerus and ulna, right and left femora) are characterised by porotic and coarse external surfaces, represented in the right ulna and both femora by a secondary, intra vitam bone apposition. The endoscopic and radiological analyses reveal a sclerotic change in the medullar cavity caused by irregular filling of spongy bone. Additionally, the compact bone substance (cortex) is apparently affected by slight vestiges of a mild osteoclastic resorption. Up to now, any reliable diagnosis cannot be established and the etiology of this disease is not really known. A tumorous or inflammatory process as well as a special form of bony myelosclerosis are under discussion. Light microscopic and scanning-electron microscopic as well as biochemical analyses are planned to be carried out in the near future to obtain a reliable diagnosis. ER -
