After reviewing the archaeological record of the first settlers, it argues that the colonization process was a dynamic one, replete with both continuities and discontinuities. A comparison of this record to ethnographic data indicates both that the first Australians lived very different lifeways and, more importantly, that the crucial issue in understanding both the Australian archaeological and ethnographic records is understanding the changing people in a changing environment.
