N2  - Symbole et langage symbolique sont d'abord définis. Dans l'art rupestre saharien, une période ancienne (5000-3000 BC), incluant notamment les gravures du Bubalin Naturaliste et les peintures des Têtes Rondes, utilise fréquemment le langage symbolique. Mais après l'Aride Postnéolithique, une période récente (1000 BC à nos jours) est presque totalement dénuée d'expressions symboliques. Les causes de cette laïcisation de l'expression artistique sont discutées: l'aridification qui disloque les populations et les corps de croyances, la montée générale, dans l'aire méditerranéenne, des valeurs individuelles et notamment militaires, qui marquent l'instauration de la civilisation urbaine. Elles remplacent l'univers spirituel et les valeurs collectives des antiques sociétés des paysans et pasteurs néolithiques.
N2  - [The Two Periods in the Symbolic Texture of the Saharan Rock Pictures.]
At first symbol and symbolic language are defined. On the Saharan rock art an early period (5000-3000 BC), which mainly includes the engravings of the Naturalistic Bubaline school and the paintings  of the Round Heads, frequently uses a symbolic language. Inversely after the Postneolithic Arid Phase, a recent period (1000 BC - today) is almost completely devoid of symbolic manifestations. The reason for this secularization of art are discussed: the progress of aridity, which dismembers populations and sets of beliefs; the global rise, throughout the Mediterranean area, of individualistic and mainly military values, markers of the advent of the urban civilization. They take the place of the spiritual world and the collective values of the ancient societies of neolithic peasants and herdsmen.
