Examination of 75 males and 58 females from this collection revealed elevated levels of dental caries, antemortem tooth loss, and alveolar abscesses suggesting dietary preferences conducive to dental disease without sufficient dental hygiene. A low frequency of dental hypoplasia suggests low childhood morbidity. Comparative data from elsewhere in Europe and the Americas indicate that the dental disease in 19th century Spain was elevated but similar to that found in other regions at the time. ER -
