Using the example of 95 populations of the Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age (ca. 1300–500 B.C.) with a predominant cremation custom, a 22 percent mortality rate is determined for the age class from birth to the completed second year of life. The high variability of the findings (R = 10.8–34.1 percent) is striking in this age class. The probability of death decreases in the following cohorts and remains almost constant from the age of nine onwards, averaging 3.5 percent. The age classes from birth to the end of the eighth year of life have a lasting influence on subadult mortality. Regional emphases are not discernible. A diachronic improvement in the probability of death among the youngest children is small. ER -
