N2  - In anthropology even as in other sciences it is advantageous to use international standardized abbreviations or signs for routine procedures. After the description of older methods of presenting teeth and toothgroups in shortened form by formulas and schemes which, to some extent, are still being used, there follows a discussion of the advantages of the two digit system that was proposed by the "Fédération Dentaire Internationale" in 1970.
