N2  - A new View on the Discovery in the Býčí skála-Cave.
It has become lately necessary to revise Wankel's discovery from the year 1872 in view of our latest knowledge about the Hallstatt Period. On confronting Wankel's conclusions with the collection of his finds certain doubts arouse as regards his interpretation. The anthropological expertise has dismissed the fundamental idea that it was a knight's tomb, together with the story of a cruel burial ceremony. Now the location is believed to have been a hiding place for a group of people on flight, with supplies of food, textiles, tools and with a considerable reserve of luxury goods. The group belonged to the Horákov culture but its material culture contains also some foreign elements linked probably with the exploitation of iron ore, production of iron and long-distance trade. It seems that the group found shelter in the cave during adverse situations, perhaps it underwent severe fights. The discovery is dated to the 5th century B.C. (HD-2) and therefore the idea that the group came in contact with the Scythians cannot be excluded. Preliminary results of the speleological and physical investigation of the cave indicate that the end of the stay in the cave was caused by a catastrophe. After the fall of ceiling fire broke out and caused slow carbonization of the or¬ganic substances.
