The Anabaptists, who started to settle on our territory after 1526, brought here
the production of china. Their seats were concentrated in the desmenes of South Moravia
(current districts Břeclav, Hodonín and Uherské Hradiště), but after 1622 the Anabaptists as
non Catholics had to leave. They went mostly to the neighbouring West-Slovakian region where
they went on producing china. The Anabaptist community having fallen apart in the last quarter
of the 17th century, the production of china was taken over by individual craftsmen looking for
better working conditions on the Moravian territory. They settled in Moravian villages Ždánice,
Nové Hvězdlice, Vyškov and Bučovice and their goods following the Anabaptists' tradition present
the features of the new environment (new decorative elements, influence of the customers on the
look of the goods, formal differences between Moravian and Slovak production etc.). The material
conserved in the Ethnographic Institute of the Moravian Museum that has been enriched with many
important items in the last decades, allows to deepen the knowledge of the oldest Moravian china.

The terminology of jewellery has been elaborated neither in art history nor in ethnology.
The terms of jewel and decoration have frequently been interchanged. An object treated in a goldsmith's
way is considered as a jewel, whereas embellishments and decoration are objects from natural materials.
As the boundary between these terms is vague, it is better to use the general term jewel.
Key words: Jewel - embellishment - decoration - artificial jewellery - painting - tattoo - scarring -
body deformation

One of the research priorities of the Spiš Museum in Levoča is the study of wedding customs in the
multicultural environment of the central Spiš region. The study concentrates on three communities
of Orthodox (Greek-Catholic) rite, i.e. Nižné Repaše, Torysky and Olšavica situated in the Levoča
Hills, adjacent to Roman-Catholic communities. Since the second half of the 20th century, the originally
homogenous culture of the above mentioned villages has gradually been changing. The traditionalism of the
villages of the Orthodox rite is still obvious in several original nuptial habits that have been changing
or disappearing quicklier in villages of the Roman-Catholic rite. This trend can be observed on the example
of traditional attributes of the wedding ceremonies.
