Open zoological store-room
The zoological collections preserved in the castle of Budišov belong to the oldest
ones in the Moravian Museum. They started in the 1st half of the 19th century
and have been gradually complemented with new acquisitions. Besides species
typical for this country they contain specimens of mammals, birds, amphibians,
reptiles and fish from other zoogeographic regions.
The visitor can see, for example, birds from New Guinea and north-eastern Australia as well as colibris from South America, the smallest birds of the planet, or various kinds of parrots living in tropical regions. The collection of birds also contains examples of non flying birds such as ostriches and penguins. Water birds are represented by numerous species living both in this country and in arctic areas. The collection of stuffed mammals shows some very attractive species like platypus or opossum, children love representatives of primates (orang-outang, chimpanzee) and beasts of prey (lion, tiger, leopard, bear). An important part of the collections are trophies from hunting expeditions to Africa, Asia and Canada at the beginning of the 20th century. Collections of fish, amphibians and reptiles are less extensive. Besides stuffed specimens there are also preparations in spirit. This part of the collection also includes representatives of invertebrates. Many visitors will appreciate the rich collection of shells and concha. A new store-room hosts the rich zoological material obtained during the expeditions into the Danube delta (Romania) in 1979-1994 and presented to the public in the exhibition "At the End of the Danube".
