| Abstract | | Was Toumaï (Sahelanthropus tchadensis) buried? Photographs taken when the skull of Toumaï was discovered establish that the holotype of one of the earliest known hominid species was probably reburied in the recent past. Taphonomic analysis reveals the likelihood of one, perhaps two, burial(s) which seemingly occurred after the introduction of Islam in the region during the 11th century. Les documents photographiques de la mise au jour de Toumaï permettent d'établir que cet holotype de l'une des plus anciennes espèces d'hominidés se trouvait probablement au sein d'une sépulture aménagée récemment. L'analyse taphonomique révèle en effet la possibilité de l'existence d'une, voire de deux, inhumation(s) vraisemblablement en rapport avec l'introduction de l'islam dans la région au XIe siècle.
