'Nowak O, Piontek J, Rewekant A, 2009: Opportunity for natural selection in the rural population of Podberezce (Ukraine) in the 19th and 20th centuries. Anthropologie (Brno) 47, 1-2: 81-88'.

Abstract
The goal of this communication is to present a case study describing the opportunity for natural selection researched through the use of the Crow's Index. By measuring differentiated fertility (If) and mortality (Im) of the local population of Podberezce, Ukraine, we argue that the decrease in the opportunity for natural selection was caused by the improvement of the overall economic status of the observed population. The database consists of archival data from 201 questionnaires (106 males and 95 females) collected between 1937-1938. Crow's index has been very useful in the differential analysis of fertility and mortality in various human populations. Crow's Index values of the investigated population are close to the averages observed in other rural Central and Eastern European groups at the turn of the 20th century.
