Abstract
Transition to farming in Europe is described as a combination of historic and demic processes in which the last foraging societies played a significant role. It has resulted in an important technical, economic and cultural polymorphism of the first farming societies. In the Western North European plains, the presence in Early Neolithic burials of perforated gastropods also identified in Mesolithic context is commonly interpreted as resulting of acculturation process involving autochthonous foragers. This statement however does not provide information on economic and technological changes underlying the beads manufacture that may have occurred. We have followed this line of inquiry by the study of personal ornaments from the Essenbach-Ammerbreite cemetery (Kreis Landshut, Bavaria) attributed to the Linear Pottery Culture. A total number of 183 pieces composed of perforated gastropods, dentalium, Spondylus and calcareous shell beads, recovered from six burials were analyzed. By sourcing the raw material and registering the anthropogenic modifications on the pendants through morphometric, technological and use-wear analyses, information on the procurement strategies and manufacturing techniques were collected. Results show that Early Neolithic communities from Bavaria maintained the use of personal ornaments already present in Eastern Neolithic societies, as Spondylus shell beads, but also adopted novel local raw material in their personal ornamentation. The development of local cultural traits may be a sign of a partial freeing of Bavarian societies from Eastern Neolithic Danubian standards. A regional and diachronic comparative study shows that the freshwater gastropods used in the personal ornamentation of the farming communities from Bavaria was already present in the personal ornamentation of the autochthonous Final Mesolithic societies. The hypothesis of the maintenance of cultural traits between Mesolithic and Early Neolithic societies is offset by the changes identified in both the raw material procurement strategies and manufacturing techniques. Cultural mechanisms that might have been responsible for such a pattern are discussed.
