Abstract | Skeletons of 857 adult individuals from various selected samples were examined and detected variations and anomalies of the vertebral column were classified either as ontogenetic, phylogenetic or of mixed origin. The conclusion was made that ontogenetic and phylogenetic variations are definitely different types of individual variability. While ontogenetic variations (of vertebral bodies and arches) are not interrelated, age, sex and body build dependent peculiarities, phylogenetic ones (border shifts between regions) are significantly correlated, related to the body size, and this explains sex differences in their occurrence. | | Keywords | Vertebral column - Variations - Anomalies - Palaeoosteological samples - Lithuania | |
