Abstract
Mandibular features of Neanderthals and modern humans are compared using photographs in norma lateralis. Digitised datas were analysed by quantitative uni- and multivariate statistics and show for both groups specific mandibular traits. The results of the European and Near East sample do not prove a gradual change or diachronic trend in the lower jaw morphology from Neanderthals towards modern humans and can therefore not support the model of multiregional evolution.
