Abstract
Growth is quantitative, and development is a qualitative change from birth to the end of adolescence. One indicator of normal growth and development is motor development in preschool-age children. It can be defined as a continuous process of changes in motor behavior under the influence of genetic inheritance, maturation of the nervous system, and external influences, primarily experience and exercise. By monitoring this development, important information about a child's progress or regression can be obtained to ensure optimal progress through motor stimulation. Among several instruments for monitoring motor development, the Test of Gross Motor Development (TGMD) is most commonly used in practice because it focuses on the quality of movement performance rather than quantity. Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines for systematic reviews, this work aims to determine its importance in assessment and provide a comparative analysis of its second and third versions (TGMD-2, TGMD-3) in preschool children. Materials and methods: WoS, Google Scholar, PubMed, and SCIndeks databases were systematically reviewed for the period 1985–2025 using keywords in Serbian and English. Results: The initial search yielded 65 papers. Following PRISMA screening and eligibility criteria, 36 papers were included in the final analysis. Conclusion: Comparative analysis shows that TGMD-3 provides greater diagnostic precision with stricter criteria. While this test measures the external manifestation of movement, sensorimotor integration remains the internal process enabling that manifestation.
