Abstract
The authors have studied the palatal cavity of a sample of fifteen modern humans, six fossil hominids, and six chimpanzees. Silicon prints of the cavity were done with the frontal plan going through the upper second molars as posterior limit. The casts of the hard palate obtained were analysed morphologically. Transversal and longitudinal sections permitted a morphometric study and reconstruction of the schematic architecture for each kind of section and each skull. A modern configuration was distinguished with a short, wide, and relatively deeper hard palate recognised in all the genus Homo except for KNM-WT 15 000 A, and a simian configuration with a long, narrow, and shallow palatal cavity included chimpanzees, AL 200-1, and OH 5. An anatomically modern hard palate seems to be present as soon as -140 000 years in Broken Hill 1.
