'Padmanabham PBSV, 1985: Selection Intensity among the Rural and Urban Naika of Gujarat, India. Anthropologie (Brno) 23, 2: 101-103'. |

Abstract | Industrialisation and urbanisation are two forces that are bringing rapid changes into many traditional groups in India. Naika is one such group inhabiting the southern Gujarat. In the present paper an attempt has been made to see whether there is any difference, in Selection Intensity (I) between two communities of the Naika tribe maritally isolated from each other and exposed to the forces of modernisation differently. The urbanised community is settled in Atul and the rural community in Koparli, both located in the Valsad District of Gujarat. The mortality component (Im) of the Index outweighs the fertility component (If) in both locations to a great extent and the selection intensity is significantly different 0.4814 in the rural and 0.834 in the urban locations. | | Keywords | Selection intensity - Gujarat India - Urbanisation - Rural & Urban - Intensifier effects - Family Planning | |
