Abstract
This communication is analyzing neoteny from the point of view of general morphology and its role in the evolution of man. A new definition of neoteny is presented here and its character is described as an important phenomenon in the process of hominization. The present-day approach to neoteny is compared with the Bolk's theory of fetalization and the main causes of refusing the role of neoteny in the anthropogenesis is explained. Its phylogenetic meaning is emphasised, especially in relation to the function of natural selection. Attention is paid to some neotenic features of the skull, first of all to the findings of the genus Australopithecus, and to the role of neoteny in the evolution of the hominid brain. Finally, the relation between neoleny and main hominization factors is considered.
