Abstract
This paper examines EUP backed blades industries in central/eastern Europe. Core reduction strategies, morphology of retouched tools and raw material procurement systems indicate similarities and differences between particular regional groups in southern Poland, Slovakia, Moldova and Romania, as well as relations to the Late Middle Palaeolithic industries, and to other EUP transitional industries. Patterns of geographical distribution and strategies of land use also aid in the interpretation of similarities and differences between different Late Middle Palaeolithic and EUP units. The evolution of backed blade industries is examined and models of independent development vs acculturation are evaluated.
