Abstract
Burials have always been considered as the major funerary practice of the Palaeolithic Age. In fact, the small amount of burials found in comparison to isolated bone remains induces us to reconsider this point of view. Besides, the study of the material allows to display the multiplicity and complexity of funerary rites during this period of time. For instance, in some Middle and Upper Palaeolithic areas fire and death are clearly associated, but in a different way. Finally, many skull remains, preserved apart, but within the dwelling level, show cutmarks resulting from stripping off the flesh or dressing: they give evidence that, in some palaeolithic groups, the skull of the dead was kept close to the living.
