Abstract
The author specializes in calculating the number of people living a time in the settlements of the Upper Iron Age (La Tène) in Bohemia. He presents a survey of the hitherto achievements realized in this field on the basis of various methods and subjects them to a critical analysis. The most frequent method uses demographic calculations on the basis of completely researched burials. The results of this approach are negatively influenced by the fact that these burials necessarily do not contain the remains of all people who once lived in the settlement. The size of the population living in the settlement can be assessed also according to the acreage of the fields and economic background that belonged to it. Other important source of information are the pits that served for keeping cereal seeds. One chapter summarizes the hitherto conclusions as regards the size of an average family in those times. The biggest concentration of the population in the Iron Age can be found in the Celtic oppida. However, the testimony by the antique authors on the number of the inhabitants of these oppida should be regarded as exaggerated. The author compares the results of some of the above methods with concrete archaeological materials, namely on the basis of some recent researches realized in north-western Bohemia. On the basis of recently published burial cadasters in various regions of Bohemia it contains also some new data on the relative density of settlements. The material basis of Celtic burials, however, is greatly influenced by the present state of research. It is expected that thanks to new finds these localities will increase by 50—80 % in the foreseeable future. In conclusion the author makes some tests, checking the assessed number of inhabitants of the northern-half of Bohemia in the Upper Iron Age (La Tène). The assessed 50 000 contemporarily living inhabitants in this territory should be regarded as maximum
